Brass & Baubles ~ A Vintage Quilt

It has been a long time since I said goodbye to this beautiful quilt.

Last fall when I did the Etsy: Made in Canada show I had a lot of questions about custom work. One of the requests came from a wonderful girl named Allison. She had been holding on to the bunting from her wedding for a few years hoping to meet someone who could turn it into a quilt for her. Her mom and Grandmother had used vintage style fabrics to sew up hundreds of feet of bunting that were used to decorate the tent that their wedding was held in.

I felt a little bit bad taking apart of their beautiful work but I knew the end result would be worth it. Not all of the fabrics were cotton and each of them was hand cut meaning they were not the exact same size.... which makes creating a quilt challenging. David helped me cut up all of the pieces of this beautiful quilt and work on the layout. To say that it was a challenge is an understatement. I also made a matching pillow at her request for a cousin. The end result is a beautiful quilt with some pretty incredible sentimental value.

A Quilt for Our Little Man

You may not remember, but two Christmas' ago I made matching quilts for the kids.

Each quilt had it's own colour scheme but the pattern was the same and some of the quilting matched. I knew when I got pregnant again that I wanted this baby to have the same quilt as well. When we found out we were having a boy I started envisioning a grey and orange colour scheme. I didn't tackle the quilt until less than three weeks ago! How is that for procrastination.....

I went to our Modern Quilt Guild meeting on a Wednesday at Earthly Goods where I bought my fabric. I had everything pieced that weekend. I put together the back throughout that week and quilted the entire thing the next weekend. By the time Sunday night came around, I had finished the hand binding. I finished the entire thing in a week and a half! I guess that is what happens when you have a serious deadline.

I chose a mix of fabric lines and patterns and used orange and cream flannels that I had picked up a couple of months ago at Quiltessentials. I love the way it looks in Hugh's room. It's perfect and I hope he loves it as he gets older.

Henry Learns to Big Boy Skate

Does anyone else have a little boy or girl who KNEW that they wanted to play hockey at age two?

Henry has been on a mission since he first started paying attention to what hockey is. He is constantly talking about when he can join a team and is determined to learn how to skate. He wants to be the next Connor McDavid so bad! We started him on his bob skates last year and he picked it up really fast. He would skate around with a huge grin on his face... even if he fell. This year Dave decided that he was ready for some real big boy skates. A couple of weeks ago we took him out for his first go on single blades.

There was a lot of falling but the smile never faded. He held onto the ice walker for dear life but did a great job walking around on dry land when he was practicing his balancing. He held on and let Dave push him around for over a half hour. Dave even got him standing on his own on the ice a few times!

When it was time to go there were more than a few tears. To say we have a hockey lover on our hands is an understatement. I'm excited to see where this all goes...

The Progression of a Pregnancy

Looking back through the blog at how I documented my pregnancies with Sydney and Henry I feel a little bit bad about the lack of info I have provided about this little one.

Call me cautious after the loss of Oliver, but I felt a lot more protective of this pregnancy. I was worried that if I talked about it too much I would jinx it or something bad would happen. I think I became superstitious.

We didn't tell our families until right before we announced publicly that we were expecting. I was too scared to say anything so we waited until after the first trimester was over. I was over 17 weeks when we told other people. It just seemed right to be quiet about it. But I did try to document my growth along the way. After all, this is my last pregnancy...

Sydney's First School Project

I feel like we have entered that stage of parenting where we get to re-live all of our years in grade school.... the homework years.

Sydney was assigned her first real project a few weeks ago. The kindergarten kids are doing an insect unit and each had to choose an insect to build a habitat for. Of course this meant that the parents would be building a habitat with "help" from the kids. We had about a week and a half to come up with a plan and send the finished product off to school with the kids.

I was not surprised at all when Syd chose to do a Ladybug habitat. I am pretty sure half of the girls chose to do Ladybugs. We emptied one of Dave's shoe boxes, filled out the worksheet that needed to be finished with the habitat and got to work. In the end it turned out great and she actually helped do most of it! She had to do a short presentation about the habitat in French too so we practiced a few facts that she had nailed down by the time she had to present. Here are a few photos of the finished product and one proud little lady:
