A getaway within a getaway may seem a little bit excessive... but when it means seeing a Balinese sunset on the ocean, it's actually mandatory.
An over night to the beach from Ubud was something that we wanted to do from the very beginning. Ubud is so beautiful but very far inland and Bali is famous for it's beaches and we could not wait to see what all of the fuss was about. We booked a reasonably priced hotel right off the beach and hired our driver to take us on the hour and a half trip. We stopped at the Wood School on the way down and (after a little bit of a room mix up) we checked into the Fox Harris Hotel.
First order of business was getting some lunch at the roof top restaurant and jumping in the infinity pool. Hugh needed a nap so Dave and I traded off playing with the kids and sitting in the room with Hugh. It was a nice way to cool off before an incredible dinner at Cuca (more on that in another blog post).
The best part was yet to come. We rushed through dinner to catch the unset on the beach. We had intentionally picked a beach on the East coast so that we could really enjoy it... and it was worth every minute and dollar spent. It was also the kids first time to the ocean on this trip. We told them to stay dry but I don't even know why we tried. They were soaking wet and covered in sand in their full clothing within minutes! We were just so happy to watch them taking it all in with such incredible joy.
Back at the hotel we rinsed off the kids in the shower and watched some shows in bed (they had English TV!) before we went our separate ways. Sydney and I had a room across the hall and the boys all shared. It worked out really well.
The next morning brought the best breakfast we have had so far. A full buffet breakfast on the roof of the hotel was exactly what we needed after eating toast, yogurt and muesli for the last three weeks. The kids went crazy and loaded up with all of their favourites.

Then it was back to the beach for some fun in the sun and sand. Hugh was being a mega wimp about going in the water so I spent most of my time in the sand with him. The kids took turns burying each other and David and they made a moat around a castle so that they could watch the tide slowly fill it. It was so perfect.
We sent out a message in a bottle. |
To make things easy we headed back to our hotel pool to rinse off in the shower, enjoy some more pool time and grab lunch at the swim up bar. It was the perfect way to end an amazing two days. Our driver returned to pick us up at 2pm and we headed home to Ubud with three very tired kids in tow. I don't think we could have had a better time.
